Most. Depressing. Fortune. Ever.

Why? Well for starters, one of my pet peeves are fortunes that aren't actually fortunes. I know there are people with more important concerns out there like world peace. I just ask for fortunes that aren't posers.

But seriously......embracement of emptiness? This is the greatest ownership I can have? Do these people not realize that they might have single people receiving the fortune cookie of gloom? Perhaps I should just feel fortunate that I got this one and not a more suicidal individual. Because I could see this pushing them over the edge.

Not only can I not eat the danged cookie, but then I get this. Mediocre Chinese food was not worth this reward. (And yes, sometimes I agree to Chinese only because I want the fortune).

That just plain stinks.

You should have asked for a new cookie.

I am sorry!

I think I would rather embrace emptiness than eat mediocre chinese food. Seriously, is it worth it? Hehe...

The last fortune cookie I remember getting told me that I couldn't play and that I had to work tha day. Booooo for non-fortune cookies.

Perhaps it means all you really have is yourself. Not emptiness as inside yourself, but emptiness meaning ones lack of material possesions or in this case, embracing life instead of your stuff?

I'm just trying to look on the brightside.

This is one of my pet peeves, too! We look to the Chinese and their Ancient Wisdom to help us steer our lives, and they are getting TIMID! Between this and the lead-based paint...I dunno. All I can say is they'd better be grateful our idiot president's obsessed with Iran at the moment...

I just dug my most recent fortune out of the depths of my purse:

"Now is a great time to broaden your scope of influence."

Also not a fortune. More like a counseling session or infomercial. But better then emptiness, for sure. Don't embrace the emptiness, Sara. The cookie is evil.

This also sounds like something from the tv show LIFE

A better quality chinese restaurant will produce a better quality fortune. You were just feeling emptiness because the food didn't satisfy your soul......

And, the restaurant establishment wants YOU to take full responsibility for the empty feeling that their meal brought you....after all...you paid for it...you OWN the food now.

Basically they don't want to work harder to make better food and they want you to "deal with it."

Simple...i get it.
don't eat there again.

my last fortune said," you will get pregnant in three days" NOW THAT's a FORTUNE!!!! So, when day three came, I pretended I was really mad at my husband and we slept in separate rooms. So, you see, even the good ones aren't what we're hoping for!

Sarah, I just LOVE reading your work. I think your " Create in 08" should be some kind of a book. I'll take my copy signed when it's published.

You're awesome. Just the fact that you are part of such an awesome family makes you unique and different in all the best ways. Keep the quirky stuff coming, you're hilarious.
Love,
erin Sivert ( you know, Jess's friend)

i also hate non-fortune fortune cookies. that one was horrible. it's like "you're alone. completely alone. you have no one. HAVE A NICE DAY!"

the best non-fortune fortune cookie i've seen? one of my male friends got "you look pretty". it was perfect.

I share this hatred! However, I do share you love for Tilly and the Wall and Beck. I just found and loaded Odelay onto my iPod!

I once got a fortune cookie from Panda Express that said, "Buy the red car." I said, "Screw you, you capitalistic running dog fortune cookie," and bought a black one.

Hi, Sarah. I understand about stupid non-fortunes. My friend got one once that said "You would make a good lawyer". Another said "You are now $6.85 poorer. $8.50 if you got the drink." What kind of fortunes are those??

This is a great post and a great blog you have here.

Non-fortune fortune cookies always frustrate me as well.

At the risk of coming off as the “no one asked you!” kind of jerk, the fortune cookie I agree is a “non-fortune” cookie. However, in old Chinese traditions, especially poetry, emptiness represents the Buddhist state of Nirvana/inner peace, or inner emptiness/clarity achieved by ridding your mind of worldly and unnecessary “junk”. It’s often not referred to directly, mostly in descriptions of isolation, talking a lot about the moon, meditation etc. Not so bad I think.

P.s. As also a hobbyist Photographer, do you have any of your work on here? Would love to see it.
