(Not exactly) Social Work

Yeah. I am beginning to have issues with my social work professor. Case in point, yesterday: went to class, only to discover that class consisted of watched a video of a pretty extreme anti-war activist speak. I'm not exactly Pro-war, and yes, I believe there should always be another way. Ideally, war should never be the answer. But this guy, goodness, went about his way debunking every war this country has taken part in. He actually said, that in the aftermath of WWII, everyone was excited about the outcome, but "sure, we got rid of Hitler, but did we get rid of Hitlerism? So really, what did we accomplish?" Are you kidding me? He states that war can only corrupt. And I agree that it's not a great thing. Mistakes have been obviously made, but give me an alternative! So we should have just let Hitler be? Sounds good. He considers us pulling out of Vietnam a great success for the anti-war movement. From what I know, Vietnam was such a failure for that very reason. So people really did die in vain.

I expected a little more of a liberal view than I have personally (I'm moderate, I think these extreme view on either side are freakin dangerous) but, what in the name of all that is holy did this have to do with social work? That's what gets me. Why did I even go to class?

Oh, and I turned in my take home quiz, (the last one wasn't stapled because my stapler broke, and there was no time to find a substitute) and he asked if I stapled it. I showed him that I did, and he said "See, I knew college would be good for you" in a pat on the head voice. Yes, this is an intro class, but NOT MY FIRST COLLEGE COURSE BUDDY. It just struck me as a little patronizing. Plus, I was in a bad bad mood last night.

Thank you.

Tell me about it. There is nothing wrong with dissent, or differing views. I believe they are good....yet good for nothing if all you do is complain without coming up with SOME solution.

And did I mention that this had nothing to do with social work?

Kinda like the Micheal Moore flicks that we are to be watching next week.

I hate it when professors think that class time is their own political playground.

That's not what I'm paying for.

And suprisingingly, the American Government class I am retaking for some reason (can't really remember now) is approached in the most unbiased way possible.

I had to watch michael moore films in my sociology class. they were lame too. I think he's crappy at argument and really doesn't make very good points. People are probably going to hate me for saying that, but thats my opinion.

(I miss Kim, we need to talk!)

College Professors can be dangerous. They think they know everything. Remember what they say, those who can DO and those who can't TEACH. That's not always a fair statement, obviously, but too often is very true.

That's disappointing about your social work class. I think one know's one's professor's a good one if one can't really tell for sure what one's professor's politics are. You can probably make an educated assumption as to what they are. It's hard to pull off for teachers- being unbiased. But sounds like home boy social work teacher is way off and doesn't even care to follow some basic fundamentals.
I think Michael Moore in general is pretty much harmless. But when his stuff is used by a professor to portray facts, that's really unprofessional.

I really have no problem if they even EXPRESS their personal political beliefs. Just as long as they don't try to pass them off as facts in class. And use them to as teaching tools on a completely unrelated topic. It's juvenile.

I think Mom is okay. Havent spoken to her in a while myself. Hi mom! But she's coming to visit this weekend! Whoo-hoo! Party in Salt Lake! You're all invited!

Just a quick aside on Vietnam...there is a recent effort by a solider who demonstrates, based on numbers and statistics, that the war was won on the ground while we were there despite the restrictions, but lost by the South Vietnamese army and the politicians after the pull out. Makes some pretty interesting points about where the armies were when they left.
Be that as it may, the real issue with the Vietnam war, and I could follow up on your prof's assertion that no war is ever really "won", the real issue is the moral climate change in this country. Whether I agree or disagree with it, I doubt many people would dispute it shifted hugely. Obviously, there were other factors but the way dissent was expressed in that time period moved the entire public discourse in ways that...okay, I will reveal my own bias, I find very negative.
Enjoy the manipulations...err, "carefully documented 'facts'" Mr. Moore abuses you with.
