Just ask dear old great great great grandad

So attended my amazing institute class last night. Amazing. Did I say it was amazing? So we've been talking about revelation/inspiration/help that we will be privy to when attending the temple and doing family history...through our ancestors. The teacher said something to the effect of our prayers sometimes being answered through them. What amazed me was that the class went into an uproar at the thought of such a thing. Literally blew their minds. I thought this one kid was going to spontaneously combust. I was really surprised to see how many just couldn't wrap their heads around the idea, because they "always thought they were communicating with Heavenly Father". Now I don't consider myself all enlightened, more simple minded than anything, but I thought it made perfect sense and was fascinating. I mean, we always knew that the Lord works in mysterious ways and answers our prayers in ways that will most beneficial to us. So maybe I sometimes need an answer in a way that only Susana Mahitable Rogers Sangiovanni Pickett (I probably got the last names out of order, so sue me) can give it. It's all through the power of the Holy Ghost, right?

So while I was listening to all these arguments about "how are our ancestors worthy if they may of not had their ordinances done?"....and many other much more profound observations that I need not mention here, I came upon a realization. First I wondered, so am I just way to accepting of things? No, I don' t think so, because normally it is my tendency to ask questions. No my deal is, this lesson just confirmed my silly fantasy that the whole of the gospel is much more like a fantastic order of being that you might find in the works of CS Lewis or JR Tolkien than a stuffy corporate office. Sure your ancestors talk to you, because that's the way Heavenly Father organized it silly. We all have little jobs to learn and grow from. Our ancestors are fulfilling there's and watching us and cheering us on and helping out a little here and there. I imagine them being like the eldyl....but not quite. Only watch out for the evil wizards and orks. Because they really are no fun. (I just realized that I am turning into Britten).

It makes sense to me. All this reminds me a little of the culture in Korea where they honor their ancestors (they might even pray to them, I don't remember).

I know we pray to God (Heavenly Father), but hey-- since when was any one of his servants NOT an instrument through which prayers are answered and lives are touched? I guess it shouldn't matter if they are living or dead, huh? Fascinating...

Still, isnt that a cool thought?

I think we live in a day when we really do take our ancestors for granted. I think most people would be surprised how actively engaged they are in our lives and how interested they are in our success. But you're right... just thinking about it, being conscious of the fact that they can be instruments like that... it is amazing.
